SESRIC Launched the OIC Water Report 2015 during Islamic Conference for Ministers Responsible for Water

The 3rd Session of the Islamic Conference for Ministers Responsible for Water was held on 17-19 May 2016 in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey. The Conference was hosted by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs in coordination with the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The Conference started with the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) on April 17 May, 2016 and was followed by the Third Session of the Islamic Conference for Ministers Responsible for Water on May 17-18, 2016.

The major achievement of the conference was the agreement on the terms of reference of the OIC Water Council. The OIC Water Council will promote activities recommended by the OIC Water Vision, capacity building and exchange of experience through collaboration among OIC stakeholders, elaborate on a potential financial mechanism and demonstrate success for future consideration of greater cooperation among OIC Member States. The Conference also provided an excellent opportunity for continued dialogue and increased cooperation between the OIC member countries and their partners towards promoting water security. The Conference aimed at sharing the best practices and experience in the water domain and strengthening their collaboration and cooperation with the relevant regional and international organizations.

SESRIC presented its OIC Water Report 2015 in the conference. This report highlights the current state, as well as the challenges facing OIC countries in the domain of water. It explores challenges such as: limited water availability, increasing water demand, water scarcity, balancing food production and water use, and access to water and sanitation facilities. The report also discusses the current state of implementing the OIC Water Vision. The report concludes with a set of policy recommendation on how to address the above mentioned challenges. In addition SESRIC moderated one of the panel discussions in the conference which was on Water Resources Management Capacity Building.
