SESRIC organised a Research Seminar on 'Achieving Peace and Security in a World of Turmoil: An Arduous Challenge for the OIC' on 08 February 2019 at its Headquarters in Ankara, Turkey.

In his opening statement, H.E. Amb. Musa Kulaklıkaya, Director General of SESRIC, emphasized that the founding principles of the OIC call for stability and prosperity, as the main priority. He added that despite that, over the last decade, a part of the OIC region has become less peaceful and for that reason, common responses are needed to secure peace and stability of the OIC Countries.

H.E. Amb. İbrahim Kalın, a special adviser to the President of Turkey and the presidential spokesperson, delivered the keynote speech during the Seminar.

The seminar hosted an esteemed group of panelists, including Amb. Askar Mussinov, Head of the Peace, Security & Conflict Resolution Unit, OIC General Secretariat, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Uysal, President of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (ORSAM) and Mr. Fadi Farasin, Researcher at SESRIC, who elaborated on the security challenges faced by the Islamic countries The purpose of the seminar was to probe the required ingredients for conflict prevention and management in the OIC countries, enhancing the OIC peace and security architecture, developing institutional mechanisms for sustainable peace and security in OIC countries, and exploring alternative paths for achieving enduring peace.

During the Seminar, SESRIC presented the findings of its latest research study on achieving peace and security in OIC Countries. The study points out that in today’s OIC region, most security threats can be addressed only through regional or international cooperation. A stronger dialogue and partnerships will enable the OIC governments not only to effectively tackle security issues, but it will also lay the ground for resolving bilateral disputes and moving on towards a prosperous future.
