SESRIC participated in the International Workshop on “Water and Energy Nexus in Central Asia and the Caucasus” organised by Cappadocia University in Nevşehir, Turkey on 02-03 May 2019.

The Workshop brought together academicians, senior-level experts, and policy-makers in the areas of water, energy and food security to discuss relevant topics such as water management, water and energy nexus, inter-basin water transfer, integrated water resources management, hydropolitics and transboundary river issues in Central Asia and the Caucasus.

At the Workshop, SESRIC presented a paper titled “Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Central Asia”. The presentation analysed the water availability, agricultural productivity, hydropower potential and ecological prospects in the Central Asian countries. Following the analysis across these sectors, feasibility of water-energy-food nexus approach and optimal policy mechanisms considering relative priorities and needs for food and hydropower have been discussed. Energy trade among the countries and improving the water use efficiency were identified as key elements for successful nexus approach in Central Asia.
