Dr. Savaş Alpay, Director General of SESRIC, Visited BPS-Statistics Indonesia

Dr. Savaş Alpay, Director General of SESRIC, paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Suryamin, Chief Statistician of BPS-Statistics Indonesia, in Jakarta, Indonesia on 15 March 2012.

At the outset of the meeting, Dr. Alpay congratulated Dr. Suryamin on his appointment as the Chief Statistician of Indonesia as of 21 February 2012 and wished him all the success in his office-term. Dr. Suryamin succeeded Dr. Rusman Heriawan who was appointed as Vice Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia on 19 October 2011. Dr. Alpay commended the lead role played by BPS-Statistics Indonesia in preparing and finalising the draft version of OIC Statistical Commission's (OIC-StatCom) Strategic Vision Document. Dr. Alpay also invited Dr. Suryamin to the Second Session of OIC-StatCom that will take place on 13-15 May 2012 in Izmir, Turkey. Mentioning the significance of mutual partnerships between universities and national statistical offices (NSO), Dr. Alpay said that the STIS, an undergraduate level institution administered by BPS-Statistics Indonesia, can be presented as one of the models to other NSOs which would like to raise their own human resources for the development of statistical capacity.

On his part, Dr. Suryamin thanked Dr. Alpay for his visit and stated that BPS-Statistics Indonesia kindly accepts the invitation for the Second Session of OIC-StatCom. Dr. Suryamin went on to say that BPS-Statistics Indonesia closely follows the important activities undertaken by SESRIC. As to the statistical capacity development in Indonesia, Dr. Suryamin informed the SESRIC delegation that official statistics will be offered as a compulsory class in the Indonesian universities.
