Training Course on “Waste and Harmful Substances: Medical Wastes” in Gambia

The Centre organised a training programme on “Waste and Harmful Substances: Medical Wastes” within the framework of the Environment Capacity Building (Environment-CaB) Programme, on 2-4 March 2015 in Banjul, Gambia. The course was provided by Mr. Erdoğan Karaca, expert of environment and urbanization in the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of Republic of Turkey.

 The training course on “Waste and Harmful Substances: Medical Wastes” mainly covered the following subjects:

  • General Principles of Waste Management
  • Health Risks of Medical Wastes
  • Municipal Waste Management in Hospitals
  • Hazardous Waste Management in Hospitals
  • Medical Waste Management in Hospitals
  • Legislation on Medical Waste
  • Collection and Transportation of Medical Waste
  • Sterilization of Medical Wastes
  • Incineration of Medical Wastes
  • Licencing of Medical Waste Treatment Facilities
  • Mobilized Waste Monitoring System (MoTAT) and Mass Balance System
  • Waste Declaration System

Finally, the training programme was completed with a field visit to the Serakunda Hospital and two dumpsites, namely, Banjul Dumpsite and Bakuteh Dumpsite.
