SESRIC jointly organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Turkey and the Turkish Green Crescent Society the “Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Tobacco Control Policies for OIC Member States ” in Istanbul, Turkey on 14-16 December 2016.

The workshop gathered experts from the Ministries of Health and Ministries of Finance in OIC Member States, who are responsible for evaluating, drafting, enforcing, and implementing tobacco control policies; and represented a platform for sharing knowledge on the essentials of comprehensive tobacco control policies and best practices for the tobacco policy implementation. Furthermore, the workshop aimed to encourage cooperation and sharing expertise in tobacco-related problems among OIC Member States.

During the workshop, the participants discussed the challenges on building and maintaining effective tobacco control measures and gained knowledge and expertise on inspection systems and cessation services, fiscal policy, restrictions on smoking and bans on advertising. The workshop ended with a study visit to Tekirdağ, where the participants visited the Tekirdağ Alo 171 Cessation Center of the Ministry of Health of Turkey and implemented the smoke-free law during a field inspection with the Ministry of Health inspectors.
