Arab Forum on Building Statistical Capacity for a Data Revolution

The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics of the State of Qatar in collaboration with the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21) and the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) organised the Arab Forum on Building Statistical Capacity for a Data Revolution on 10-11 October 2016 in Doha, State of Qatar. Inaugurated by HE Dr. Saleh al-Nabit, Minister of Development Planning and Statistics of the State of Qatar, the Forum was attended by more than 150 representatives from international and regional institutions national statistical offices (NSOs), academia, research institutes and business community.

On the first day of the Forum, Dr. Atilla Karaman, Senior Researcher at the Statistics and Information Department of SESRIC, moderated the session on Contextualising the Data Revolution in the Arab Region which focused on the following questions:

  • What are the key themes of the Data Revolution and its relevance for the Arab region?
  • What does the data revolution mean to the statistical community in the Arab region?
  • How to respond to data demands in adopting and customizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the national and local contexts?

The main objective of the Forum was to promote a series of specific recommendations and concrete objectives on how the data revolution can become a reality for the Arab region. The Forum is expected to adopt the Doha Declaration on Data Revolution for the Arab Region.
