Training Course on ‘SDG 1 (No Poverty) Indicators’

Within the framework of its Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme and the UN-OIC Cooperation Matrix of Activities for 2022-2024, SESRIC organised a Training Course on ‘SDG 1 (No Poverty) Indicators’ with the attendance of 19 participants from the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of 7 French speaking OIC countries as well as representatives from Human Development Report Office (HDRO) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on 21-22 February 2023 through an online video conferencing platform.

Mrs Souad Benneji, Chief Engineer, Deputy Director of Consumption and Standard of Living Statistics at the National Institute of Statistics (INS) of Republic of Tunisia, conducted the course and covered the following topics:

  • Presentation of the theoretical basis of the SDGs

o  The matrix of indicators

o  Tier classification of the UN

o   Identification of production structures

o  Global monitoring framework for the 2030 Agenda

o  Status of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Africa related to SDG1

  • Measurement of SDG 1 Indicators

o  Introduction to SDG1

o  Targets, indicators

o  Identification of sources, periodicity

  • Methodology for calculating SDG 1 indicators

o  Monetary (one-dimensional) measures of poverty

o  Targets 1-2 (Indicator 1.2.1)

o  Multidimensional poverty approach

o  Target 2 (Indicator 1.2.2)

o  Indicator measurements (Administrative)

o  Targets 3-5 and Targets A-B

The training course was attended by the representatives of HDRO of UNDP and the Regional Office of UNICEF Middle East and North Africa in line with the joint activities agreed upon during the UN-OIC General Meeting on Cooperation held on 18-20 July 2022. The experts of UNDP and UNICEF delivered presentations and briefed the participants on the efforts of both institutions with a focus on multidimensional poverty and measurement of child poverty respectively.
