Workshop on Commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

SESRIC participated in the virtual workshop on Commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities under the theme of “Enhancing Welfare and Integration of Persons with Disabilities”, hosted by the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in collaboration with the Arab Republic of Egypt, Chair of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Social Development.

The workshop aimed to review OIC’s policies on the protection and welfare of persons with disabilities, and to highlight the efforts of the OIC countries in promoting the welfare and integration of persons with disabilities in their societies. High-level representatives and experts from OIC countries, and relevant OIC institutions attended the workshop. Mr. Muzamil EDEMA, Researcher at the Economic and Social Research Department, represented SESRIC at the workshop.

The workshop commenced n with opening statements from the representatives of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Chair of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Social Development and the OIC General Secretariat. During the first session of the workshop, Mr. EDEMA delivered a comprehensive presentation on “OIC’s Policies on Protection and Welfare of Persons with Disabilities” highlighting the current state of persons with disabilities in OIC countries as well as the importance of “OIC Plan of Action on Persons with Disabilities” to spearhead the joint Islamic action in this critical domain.  Afterwards, the workshop concluded with a discussion on individual country level experiences underlining best practices in developing policy measures and regulations to address the issues and challenges faced by persons with disabilities in OIC countries.
