Expert Group Meeting on the Development of an Islamic Tourism Indicators Framework

SESRIC, in its capacity as the Secretariat of the OIC-StatCom, organised the Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the Development of an Islamic Tourism Indicators Framework virtually on 5 November 2025. The meeting is held in accordance with the relevant objectives of the Strategic Vision of the OIC Statistical Commission (OIC-StatCom) for 2030 and its Programme of Action (2021-2025), and the Strategic Roadmap for the Development of Islamic Tourism in OIC countries.

The EGM was attended by 42 representatives from National Statistical Offices and Ministries of Tourism of 18 OIC countries, as well as representatives from relevant OIC and international organisations, including Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC), and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

SESRIC presented the results of the specific module designed to identify the needs and capacities for the development of Islamic Tourism Indicators framework integrated into the SESRIC StatCaB Questionnaire. Moreover, BPS-Statistics Indonesia and Islamic Tourism Centre of Malaysia have shared their national expertise and insights related to the Islamic tourism data collection and production of relevant statistics. In addition, SMIIC has provided information on the current works and initiatives related to standards on halal tourism.

The experts have discussed on possible indicator domains, core and supplementary indicators and feasible data sources, and outlined next steps for collaboration among the members of the OIC-StatCom and relevant OIC and international organisations.
