SESRIC, in collaboration with the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will organise a Regional Workshop on “Measuring Natural Resources in the National Accounts” on 1-4 September 2026 in Chiba, Japan.

The workshop aims to strengthen the technical capacities of national statistical systems in compiling natural resource statistics in line with the System of National Accounts (SNA) and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA). It will particularly focus on recent methodological developments reflected in the 2025 SNA, including the treatment of natural resource depletion, asset classification, renewable energy resources, and the integration of natural resource accounting concepts into national accounts.

The four-day workshop will bring together officials from National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and relevant national agencies working on SNA, SEEA, natural resource statistics, and environmental-economic accounting. The programme will provide participants with technical knowledge on compiling natural resource accounts in both physical and monetary terms, including valuation methods for natural resource assets and approaches to measuring depletion.

The sessions will also cover the relationship between the SNA and SEEA frameworks, data requirements, institutional coordination mechanisms, data governance, dissemination practices, and the role of NSOs in the compilation of natural resource accounts. Participants will benefit from presentations, practical exercises, country experience-sharing sessions, and technical discussions on the application of international statistical standards in this field.

The workshop is expected to contribute to improving the availability, quality, and policy relevance of natural resource statistics, thereby supporting evidence-based decision-making on economic development, environmental sustainability, green growth, and the monitoring of national policies and international development commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals.
