Towards the Achievement of Prioritised Sustainable Development Goals in OIC Countries 2021
Date: 04 November 2021

SESRIC released the 2021 edition of its report titled “Towards the Achievement of Prioritised Sustainable Development Goals in OIC Countries”. The report covers the eight prioritised SDGs by the OIC member countries (SDGs 1-5, 8-9, and 13). To enrich the content and scope of the report, the 2021 edition covers other six SDGs, namely SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).

Out of the 185 indicators allocated for the 14 SDGs covered by the report, the analysis is conducted using only 73 for which the data are available and allow conducting the trend analyses possible for monitoring the progress towards achieving these SDGs. The report analyses whether the performance on the selected indicators has moved towards or away from the related targets under the 14 SDGs covered in the report.

Overall, the report reveals that the OIC countries, as a group, are estimated not to be able to meet any of the eight prioritised and the additional six SDGs by the year 2030 if they continue with the current pace of progress. Although some progress has been observed in SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water), these modest improvements are not sufficient to achieve the targets under the respective SDGs by 2030.

The report also presents a stagnant progress concerning SDG 2 (ending hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which means the performance of the group of the OIC countries is too slow to put them on track for the achievement of these three SDGs by 2030. The lack of the relevant data prevents a comprehensive analysis on SDGs 5, 10, 12, and 13.

The report also highlights that the achievement of SDGs may become more challenging with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and there is no doubt that it will take the OIC countries further off track towards the achievement of the SDGs.
