Towards the Achievement of Prioritised Sustainable Development Goals in OIC Countries 2025
Date: 01 November 2025

SESRIC has published the 2025 edition of its report, “Towards the Achievement of Prioritised Sustainable Development Goals in OIC Countries”. First introduced to the annual ministerial sessions of COMCEC in 2019, the report provides an annual assessment of the OIC countries’ progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on eight prioritised SDGs (SDGs 1-5, 8-9, and 13). It also evaluates advancements related to the remaining nine SDGs.

According to this year’s report, while notable advances have been achieved in several areas, including reductions in maternal and under-five mortality, expanded access to electricity and internet connectivity, and improved educational parity, overall progress remains insufficient for the OIC group to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Between 2015 and 2023, the maternal mortality ratio declined from 371 to 295 deaths per 100,000 live births, under-five mortality dropped from 63 to 52 per 1,000 live births, and the adolescent birth rate fell sharply. However, economic growth and industrialisation have lagged, with average annual GDP per capita growth standing at 1.4% across OIC countries and 2.1% in OIC least-developed countries, well below the 7% target.

The report also highlights that progress has remained stagnant under several SDGs, including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), while data gaps continue to limit comprehensive analysis for SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Persistent global challenges, including economic volatility, regional conflicts, and high inflation, further threaten the pace of progress.

The 2025 edition calls for intensified cooperation, innovative policy actions, and strengthened statistical capacities among OIC countries to accelerate progress toward a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future before the 2030 deadline.
