International Conference on Official Statistics

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) organized the International Conference on Official Statistics, on 20-22 October 2015 in Ramallah, Palestine with the sponsorship of SESRIC.

The Conference was inaugurated under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, and along with the presence of H.E. Dr. Rami Hamdallah, Prime Minister of the State of Palestine, on the World Statistics Day (20 October 2015) in the conference theatre hall within the Palestinian Red Crescent Society premises in Al-Bireh.

The conduct of this conference comes within the scope of the implementation of the decision of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSD) during its session No. 41 of February 2010, which urges the celebration of "World Statistics Day on October 20 on a regular basis every five years in all member countries”.

National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Tunisia, Sudan and UAE as well as the NSOs of Brazil, Germany, South Africa and Sweden participated in the Conference. Union of Arab Statisticians, League of Arab States, Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), United Nations Economic and Social Commision for Western Asia (UNESCWA), United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), UN-Habitat, International Statistical Institute (ISI), International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) and representatives from universities and media institutions were also present during the conference. The Centre was represented by Mr. Hüseyin Hakan Eryetli, Director of Publications and IT, who was speaker in the panel titled “Opportunities and Challenges in the Regional Cooperation and the ISI Family Role”. He briefed the participants on statistical activities conducted by SESRIC since 2007 and provided recommendations on how to increase activities of the ISI in the OIC region especially through cooperation with specialized and related regional institutions such as SESRIC and others. He indicated that 60 out of 140 training courses organized by SESRIC in the field of statistics in the OIC region were on economic statistics while in the last two years, demands for building capacities in tourism and poverty statistics have increased significantly.
