Training Course on 'Fundamentals of Occupational Hygiene'

Within the framework of SESRIC’s Occupational Safety and Health Capacity Building Programme (OSH-CaB) and in collaboration with the Directorate General of Labour Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Development of the Ministry of Manpower of Indonesia, the Centre organised a Training Course on “Fundamentals of Occupational Hygiene” on 30-31 October 2023 through an online video conferencing platform.

The training course was conducted by a competent expert from the Directorate General of Labour Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Development at the Ministry of Manpower of Indonesia for the benefit of 80 specialists and executives from the relevant Ministries and national institutions in charge of occupational safety and health in 19 OIC Member Countries.

The training course aimed to provide insights into the fundamentals of occupational hygiene in terms of understanding and managing many sorts of workplace hazards. Over the two days of the training, the following topics were covered:

  • History and background of the development of Industrial Hygiene
  • The significance of occupational hygiene in the modern workplace
  • An introduction to the physiology of the human body and how it can be affected by occupational exposure to physical, chemical and biological agents
  • Basic concepts in toxicology including hazard, dose, routes of entry/absorption, metabolism, toxicity testing
  • Material safety data sheets as sources of hazard information
  • Basic principles of risk assessments, definitions of hazard and risk with brief mention of expert systems and control
  • An introduction to the measurement of dusts, gases and vapours, including physical states of matter, types of sampling and analytical methods
  • General approaches to the control of risk to health
  • Program implementation in the industry
  • Overview of qualifications and careers in occupational hygiene

SESRIC initiated its Occupational Health and Safety Capacity Building Programme (OSH-CaB) in 2010 to support the efforts of OIC Member Countries in improving workplace safety and health. Within this framework, the Centre organizes capacity building activities tailored to the needs and capacities of the occupational health and safety institutions of the OIC Member Countries, using modalities such as training courses, workshops, and study visits.
