SESRIC Participated in the 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission

Date: 03-06 March 2026
Venue: New York, USA

SESRIC participated in the 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) held in person in New York from 3 to 6 March 2026, and also organised two side events on its margins.

As the highest platform in the international statistical system, the Commission provides a global forum where international statistical standards are discussed and endorsed. The 57th Session included discussions on, inter alia, social and demographic statistics, data governance, AI-readiness, environment and climate change statistics, and well-being measurement, alongside a broad range of other topics on advancing official statistics.

In addition to the formal session, SESRIC, in its capacity as the Secretariat of the OIC Statistical Commission (OICStatCom), organised two side events, namely the Follow-up Meeting of the 14th Session of the OIC-StatCom, and a panel discussion on “Strengthening Agricultural Census Systems in OIC Countries: Lessons Learned and Future Directions”.

The follow-up meeting provided a platform to review progress on the implementation of the OIC-StatCom resolution items, strengthen coordination among national statistical systems in OIC countries, and support evidence-based policymaking and sustainable development.

The other side event on agricultural census brought together chief statisticians and technical experts to exchange practical lessons from recent agricultural census experiences and discussed forward-looking priorities for strengthening agricultural census systems in OIC countries, including the effective use of census results for policy-relevant outputs supporting food security, rural development, and sustainable agriculture.

Moreover, the 57th Session of the UNSC included several side events, focusing on AI-readiness for official data and statistics, beyond GDP, food security, 2030 round of population and housing censuses, SNA 2025, mobile positioning data among others.
