Workshop on the Role of NGOs in the Implementation of OIC Strategic Health Program of Action 2014-2023 (SHPA)

The Centre organised a Workshop on the Role of NGOs in the Implementation of OIC Strategic Health Program of Action 2014-2023 (SHPA), on 7-8 April 2014 at SESRIC Headquarters in Ankara, Republic of Turkey. 
The OIC Strategic Health Program of Action 2014-2023 (OIC-SHPA) adopted by the Fourth Islamic Conference of Health Ministers (ICHM) held in Jakarta on 22-24 October 2013 had foreseen several action points to be potentially undertaken by non-governmental organisation (NGOs) during the implementation of the OIC-SHPA. The Eighth Meeting of the Steering Committee on Health that was held in Jakarta on 25-26 March 2014 has further underlined the role of engaging civil society in the implementation of the OIC-SHPA and expressed its support for the initiative of SESRIC to convene a meeting of international NGOs in the area of health with a view to developing collaboration with them towards the implementation of the SHPA and complementing the efforts of the states.

In this connection, the workshop brought together representatives of NGOs working in health related areas in OIC Member Countries, namely Islamic Medical Association, Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization, Muslim Aid, Qatar Red Crescent, Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA), Aksi Cepat Tanggap of Indonesia, Turkish Red Crescent, Green Crescent, Doctors Worldwide, Bashir Association. Representatives of OIC General Seretariat, SESRIC, Islamic Development Bank (IDB), and World Health Organisation (WHO) were also present in the workshop.

The meeting acknowledged the need for the provision of international integrated efforts in OIC community to facilitate, implement and monitor programs to mitigate challenges in health domain faced by the OIC member countries, and thus decided to establish the OIC Ibn Sina Health Alliance of NGOs (hereafter Alliance) as one of the  means to contribute to the achievement of  the vision of Healthy OIC Community.

The participants also agreed to develop, strengthen and maintain global partnerships and undertake joint actions to ensure solidarity, trust, transparency and optimal synergy and impact through exchange of experts, capacity building and training programs, joint projects, and study visits for the benefit of the member states.
