Towards the Achievement of Prioritised Sustainable Development Goals in OIC Countries 2023
Date: 05 December 2023

SESRIC released the 2023 edition of its report titled “Towards the Achievement of Prioritised Sustainable Development Goals in OIC Countries”. Submitted to the annual ministerial sessions of the COMCEC since 2019, the report – in its fifth edition – covers the progress recorded by the OIC member countries as a group vis-à-vis the eight prioritised SDGs (SDGs 1-5, 8-9, and 13) and other nine SDGs, namely SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 14 (Life below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

This year’s report reveals that accelerated efforts are necessary more than ever for the OIC countries as a group to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Although some progress has been observed in SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 14 (Life below Water), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), these moderate improvements are not sufficient to enable the OIC countries group achieve the targets under respective SDGs by 2030.

The report also presents a stagnant progress concerning SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) which means the OIC countries group needs more acceleration to stay on course for the achievement of these six SDGs by 2030. Additionally, lack of data prevents a comprehensive analysis on SDGs 5, 12, and 13.

The 2023 edition of the report highlights that challenges including the overlapping negative shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, regional conflicts, and high inflation across the world threaten the progress made by the OIC countries and could put them further off track towards the achievement of the SDGs.
