SESRIC convenes the Governors of the concerned financial institutions operating in OIC Member Countries for the purpose of sharing experiences on financial policies and central banking in order to catch up with the world’s agenda and follow up global trends and developments as well as to improve and enhance the level of cooperation and coordination among the Central Banks of the OIC Member Countries.
The Meeting was initiated when the world economy was still suffering the negative impacts of the global financial crisis which manifested in continuous slowdown of economic growth and high unemployment rates in many countries around the world. The Meeting worked out for the institutionalization of this SESRIC initiative, supporting the efforts of the OIC Member Countries to mitigate the negative impacts of global financial crises and shocks on their economies.
The Meeting of the Central Banks and Monetary Authorities held on 3 October 2009 in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey, adopted the Final Communiqué in which the Governors of the Central Banks and the Heads of Delegations decided to convene the Meeting of the Central Banks and Monetary Authorities of the OIC Member Countries on an annual basis.

Bank Negara Malaysia, in support of the Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre (MIFC) initiative, organized a Seminar on Islamic Finance on 28-29 September 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey. The Seminar was well attended by over 180 delegates, comprising senior business and financial leaders from Turkey and Malaysia. Eleven central banks and two multilateral organisations signed the Articles of Agreement for the establishment of the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM) on 25 October 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This global initiative is aimed to assist institutions offering Islamic financial services in addressing their liquidity management efficiently and effectively. In addition, the initiative would facilitate greater investment flows for the Islamic financial service industry. To this end, the IILM will issue, in an integrated manner, high quality Shariah -compliant financial instruments at both the national level and across borders, thereby enhancing the soundness and stability of the jurisdictions in which they operate.

The Meeting of the Central Banks and Monetary Authorities of the OIC Member Countries was held in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey, on 3rd October 2009 on “Impacts of the Current Crisis on OIC Member Countries”. The Meeting was organized jointly by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey and the Statistical Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the 25th anniversary of the OIC Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC). The Meeting was attended by H.E. Mr. Ali Babacan, Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, Governors of Central Banks and Monetary Authorities of OIC Member Countries, the OIC General Secretariat, COMCEC Coordination Office and the SESRIC.
