Conference on “The Future of Islamic Banking and Economics in Search of New Normal”

Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) participated in the conference on ”The Future of Islamic Banking and Economics in Search of New Normal” on 4-5 April 2016 at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey, which was organised by the Central Bank of Republic of Turkey (CBRT). The meeting brought together around 150 participants from prominent academicians, representatives of the Central Banks, Turkish Monetary and Regulatory Authorities and Participation Banks, representatives from International Organisations including IRTI of Islamic Development Bank Group, and the World Bank Global Islamic Finance Development Centre participated in the meeting. Dr. Cem Tintin, Researcher, Ms. Nenden Shanty, Researcher, and Mr. Abdulhamit Öztürk, Expert, represented the Centre thereat.

The two-day conference consisted of seven main sessions:

  • Regulatory Framework in Search of New Normal
  • Islamic Banking in Search of New Normal
  • Competition and Risk Taking Behaviour
  • Governance, Political Infrastructure and Efficiency
  • Financial Soundness and Stability
  • Reforms and Regulations in Islamic Banking
  • Future of Islamic Banking and Finance

The final session of the conference was held as a panel aimed to sum up main findings of the scholars, reiterate the main challenges and highlight the reform needs in Islamic Banking in terms of product innovation, statistical capacity and standards, operating mechanisms, and regulatory framework.
