Study Visit on ‘Price Statistics’ to Egypt

In accordance with its 2017 Annual Work Plan and within the framework of Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme, SESRIC organised the Study Visit on ‘Price Statistics’ to Egypt for the benefit of the Libyan Bureau of Statistics and Census (LBSC) on 13-14 November 2017. The study visit was hosted by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) of Egypt with the participation of 2 officials from LBSC.

As defined in the Classification of Statistical Activities (CSA Rev. 1 - October 2009; http://goo.gl/olg3Tz); price statistics includes any statistical activity dealing with prices, including Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs) and international comparisons of GDP, covers topics like Consumer Price Indices (CPI), inflation, Producer Price Indices (PPI), price indexes for specific products and services (e.g. Information and Communication Technology products).

The Study Visit included the discussion activities with a focus on the following topics:

o    Introducing Indices: Their utility composition, simple and weighted indices

o    Composing the Weighted Indices: Laspeyres, Bash, Fisher, Amended Laspeyres with practical application and examples

o    Examinations of Weighted Indices

o   International methodology for calculating Consumer Prices Indices (inspection, collection of prices, products replacement, publication and dissemination)

o    Weighted Indices of Consumers Prices in Egypt: Bulletin methodology as a practical example
