The Second Meeting of the COMCEC Poverty Alleviation Working Group was held on December 26th, 2013 in Ankara, Turkey with the theme "Targeting Mechanisms of the Social Safety Net Systems in the COMCEC Region". The Meeting was attended by the representatives of 14 OIC Member States including Azerbaijan, Benin, Cameroon, Egypt, Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The Centre was represented thereat by Mr. Atilla Karaman, Senior Researcher, and Mr. Abdulhaki Korbayram, Researcher. Representatives of the COMCEC Coordination Office, IDB, World Bank Ankara Office and Municipality of Altındağ also attended the Meeting.

Training Course on 'Transport and Communication Statistics' in United Arab Emirates

The 2nd Meeting of the OIC/COMCEC Private Sector Tourism Forum was held on 16-17 December 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey under the theme "Effective Marketing Strategies for Promoting Tourism Destinations in the COMCEC Region" with the collaboration of Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey and Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial of the Organization of Islamic Countries (COMCEC). The Forum was attended by public and private sector representatives from 18 OIC Member Countries, OIC General Secretariat and relevant OIC institutions, including Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), COMCEC Coordination Office, and Islamic Centre for Development of Trade (ICDT).

The workshop on “Improving Agricultural Value Chains to Strengthen Competitiveness and Marketing” was held on 12 December 2013 in Ankara, Turkey. The workshop was jointly organized by the Turkish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MoFAL), United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). The workshop was attended by the relevant departments of the MoFAL, private sector companies, producer organizations, civil society and international organisations. SESRIC was represented by Mr. Mazhar Hussain, Senior Researcher, Research Department and Mr. Efe Kerem Aydın, Programme Coordinator, Training and Technical Cooperation Department thereat.

Training Programme on 'Statistical Database Design and Visualization Tools Development'

The Third Session of the Statistical Commission of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC-StatCom), held on 10-12 April 2013 in Ankara-Turkey, has welcomed the initiative of the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) in offering the National Statistical Offices (NSO) of OIC Member Countries its Motion Chart Module (SMC) to enable them present their data in a visual way so as to improve the analytical capabilities and effective use of data in evidence based policy making. In accordance with the relevant resolution of the OIC-StatCom, SESRIC and Islamic Development Bank (IDB) jointly organized the Training Programme on “Statistical Database Design and Visualization Tools Development” on 11-12 December 2013 at SESRIC Headquarters in Ankara, Republic of Turkey.

The 2013 Meeting of the Central Banks and Monetary Authorities of the OIC Member Countries

Organized jointly by the SESRIC, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) and General Secretariat of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Central Banks and Monetary Authorities of the OIC Member Countries was held on 27-28 November 2013 in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the hospitality of the SAMA. Delegates from OIC member countries – including governors, deputy governors and central bank experts – and representatives of international organizations such as Islamic Financial Services Board, Financial Stability Board and Basel Committee attended the Meeting. Themed “Impact of Recent International Financial Regulatory Reforms on OIC Countries”, the two-day Meeting was comprised of an Expert Group Workshop (EGW) on the first day and a Governors Meeting on the second. The Centre was represented by Prof. Savas Alpay, Director General; Mr. Nabil Dabour, Director of Economic and Social Research Department and Dr. Umut Unal, Researcher.

The short term forecasting course was provided by Mahmut Günay and M. Utku Özmen and the inflation targeting practices course was provided by Salih Fendoğlu, Mahmut Günay and M. Utku Özmen with the participation of relevant members of Central Banks of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Uganda and Yemen.

29th Session of the COMCEC

Fourth Islamic Conference of Health Ministers: 'Better Nutrition, Better Health, Better Ummah'

The Fourth Islamic Conference of Health Ministers with the theme of “Better Nutrition, Better Health, Better Ummah” was held in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia on 22-24 October 2013. The Conference was attended by the Ministers of Health and high-level representatives from 36 OIC Member States, various OIC institutions and international organizations and entities. The aim of the Conference was to adopt the OIC Strategic Health Programme of Action 2014-2023 (OIC-SHPA) along with its Implementation Plan and provide an opportunity for the Ministers and Representatives of the Member States to review the status of health in OIC, examine major health-related issues and identify concrete measures for strengthening cooperation among the OIC member countries with regard to health infrastructures, education, training, capacity building, disease surveillance, prevention and control as well as self-reliance in drugs and vaccine production. Prof. Savas Alpay, Director General, and Mr. Mazhar Hussain, Senior Researcher, represented the Centre thereat.

7th Meeting of the OIC Steering Committee on Health

The 7th Meeting of the OIC Steering Committee on Health was held in Jakarta on 21 and 24 October 2013 in two parts (Part 1 on 21 October 2013 and Part 2 on 24 October). Part 1 of the meeting, inter alia, reviewed the preparation for the 4th ICHM including approving the draft Implementation Plan of the OIC-SHPA, the composition of the Bureau for the Conference, draft resolutions and draft declaration and implementation plan of the vaccine manufacturers. Whereas, Part 2 was basically held for H.E. Minister of Health of Kazakhstan to hand over the chairmanship of SCH to H.E. Minister of Health of Indonesia.

The training course that was scheduled from 15 July until 27 September 2013 was provided in several training and research hospitals approved by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey. The training course ended with a certificate ceremony in Izmir.

Opening Ceremony of Turkey Country Office of the Islamic Development Bank

The official opening ceremony of the Turkey Country Office of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group was held on 19 September 2013 in Ankara, Turkey at the SESRIC headquarters. The Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), in collaboration with United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) jointly organized the Regional Seminar on “Developing a Programme for the Implementation of the 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA) and Supporting Statistics for ECO Member Countries” on 11-13 September 2013. The Seminar was hosted by SESRIC at its headquarters in Ankara, Turkey. Seventy-four participants from national statistical offices (NSO), central banks (CB), and relevant government offices of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Turkey; and from international organisations including ECO, UNSD, UNECE, and UNESCAP attended the Seminar. Additionally, representatives of Germany (Destatis and GIZ) and Norway (SSB-Statistics Norway) took part in the Seminar. Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) organised a training course on “Plant Protection: Diseases” at the Cotton Research Institute, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad, Pakistan, on 9-11 July 2013. The Course was provided by Dr Kamel Abd-Elsalam, a Molecular Plant Pathologist from the Plant Pathology Research Institute, Agricultural Research Centre, Egypt and were attended by 30 agricultural protectionists and scientists dealing with cotton production at the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute. Within the context of the programme, Pakistani scientists also received in-the-field practical training.

Seminar on Delivery Mechanisms for Disaster Risk Management

Natural disasters have been historically one of the greatest challenges against development of human societies. Today, natural or human-caused disasters are still among the serious threats to societies’ socio-economic and political development around the world. Floods, storms, epidemics, earthquakes, droughts, and many more disasters frequently interrupt and distort the lives of many around the world, in many instances taking lives, ruining investments, and forcing major relocations. During 1970-2012, the number of natural disasters around the world significantly increased. However, the OIC countries experienced a steeper trend in the occurrence of natural disasters during the last four decades, increasing from around 199 incidences in the 1970s to 1,431 incidences in the 2000-2012 with a rate of increase significantly higher than that of the world. The number of natural disasters per year increased from 13 in 1970 to a record high of 135 in 2000. The cost of damages also substantially increased in the OIC countries from US$3 billion in the 1970s to a record high of US$67 billion in the 1990s, and to US$65 billion during 2000-2012.

The participants of the meeting were; delegates of the National Statistical Office (NSO) from the 13 Arab Countries including Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Qatar, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, Tunisia, and the representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF - METAC), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Planning Jordan and the Central Bank of Jordan. Meeting on the Preparation of the Implementation Plan for the OIC-SHPA 2014-2023

The Meeting on the Preparation of the Implementation Plan for the OIC-SHPA was held on 18-19 June 2013 in Bandung, Indonesia. The meeting was attended by the health experts from ministries of health of OIC member countries and various international health organizations. During the meeting, the participants reviewed the first draft of the Implementation Plan for the OIC-SHPA and discussed the methodology to categorize the proposed activities under each thematic areas of cooperation into short, medium and long term activities. After an exhaustive debate, the meeting agreed to continue the work on the Implementation Plan and asked the lead country coordinators to incorporate the comments and suggestions of the meeting into their respective implementation plans and submit the revised documents to the all participants for review and comments. After wards, the Implementation Plan will be submitted to the 7th meeting of the OIC Steering Committee on Health on 21 October 2013 for endorsement and subsequent adoption by the 4th Islamic Conference of Health Ministers (ICHM) in conjunction with adoption of the OIC-SHPA.

The 4th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction took place in Geneva from May 19th to May 23rd on the theme: “Invest Today for a Safer Tomorrow.” The Global Platform is organized by UNISDR, the UN's office for disaster risk reduction and secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction. More than 3,000 participants have attended this event, including delegates from 165 governments, 130 academic institutions, 209 NGOs and 67 private sector companies. The Centre was represented by Dr. Kenan Bagci, Senior Researcher, at the Global Platform.

The event was attended by the President of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Abid Sharifov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Huseyngulu Bagirov, Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs of Turkey H.E. The 12th Session of the Islamic Summit Conference (The Muslim World: New Challenges & Expanding Opportunities)

The 12th Session of the Islamic Summit Conference was held in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt on 6-7 February 2013. Heads of States and Governments of 17 member countries attended the Summit. The other member countries were represented at the level of the Prime Ministers and/or Ministers of Foreign Affairs. The Summit aims at jointly reviewing the international situation in the political, economic and social fields and analysing the impact on the Muslim Ummah under the overall theme "The Muslim World: New Challenges & Expanding Opportunities". The Heads of Delegations of the member countries discussed and deliberated on a number of political and socio-economic issues of importance to the Muslim World. The Summit was preceded by a preparatory meeting of the Senior Officials on 2-3 February, and by a preparatory meeting of the Foreign Ministers on 4-5 February.

Prof. Savaş Alpay, Director-General of SESRIC, delivered a keynote speech at the 2nd International Conference on Islamic Economics and Economies of the OIC Countries (ICIE2013) which was held from 29 to 30 January 2013 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 2nd Conference was organized jointly by the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Ministry of Finance Malaysia, and Islamic Research and Training Institute, and held on the theme Islamic Economic Solutions for OIC Countries: Theory and Policy.

Training Course on ‘Agronomy: Soil Tillage’ in Uganda

Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) organised training on “Agronomy: Soil Tillage” at the Cotton Development Organisation (CDO) in Kampala, Uganda, on 15-17 January 2013. The course was provided by Prof Sheikh El Din Abdel Gadir El-Awad, an expert from Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) in Sudan, and was attended by 18 scientists dealing with cotton production of the CDO of Uganda.

The course was provided by Dr Said Abd El-Tawab Farag Hamoda, an expert from Agricultural Research Centre in Egypt, and was attended by agronomists, researchers and technicians from public and private sector.

SESRIC and World Bank Signed Memorandum of Understanding
